Professor Wang Hongjie's Team Publishes Papers in High-impact Journals
The Institute of Ecology and Environmental Governance of Hebei University was established in December 2019. It is focus on the studies of water quality security and water ecological restoration, non-point source pollution in river basin/regional soil, ecotoxicology testing of environmental pollution factors, aiming at the Baiyangdian-Daqinghe Basin (Xiong'an New Area). The Institute also provides scientific support and technique guarantee for the studies in this field. Since its establishment, the team of Professor Wang Hongjie has made new breakthroughs in the field of ecological environmental protection and restoration.
During process of ecological protection and restoration in the Baiyangdian, his team realized the importance of protecting rare and endangered wild plant and animal species. With the study subject of the yellow-breasted bunting (Emberiza aureola) which was once widespread in China, Professor Wang Hongjie's team has investigated reasons for its sharp decline in China and put forward protection measures. Their work has provided good reference for protecting other rare bird species in China. These research results were published inScience(Letter)365 (6454), 651 (IF 41.037).
In the course of conducting research on environmental pollution factors and ecological toxicology testing, his team found that micro-pollutants have a certain toxic impact on the ecological environment, especially the sludge reutilization and reduction in the process of sewage treatment. As a kind of typical micro-pollutant, antimicrobial agent can exist persistently in sludge and soil. It has the characteristic of high toxicity of degradation products, affecting the mobility of cells, causing cell poisoning. Their study found such kind of substances can not only promote the cell lysis and solubilization of sludge, but also inhibit the production of methane by sludge, changing the structure of sludge and characteristics of microbial communities. These research results were published inBioresour.Technol. 2020, 312, 123505 (IF 7.763) andJ. Hazard. Mater. 2020, 385 (IF 9.223).
Over the course of the study of non-point source pollution in river basin/regional soil, Professor Wang Hongjie's team found that heavy metal pollution is a difficulty of soil remediation and management. Considering the issue of soil heavy metal pollution, they have studied effects of composts on soil nutrient and heavy metal mobility. The results showed that the treatments applied with composts increased the nutrient, organic carbon and the cation exchange capacity. The most effective treatment method of soil remediation was to use 25% MSW-AC. At the same time, the team also participated in researches of soil remediation and fertilizer improvement in the Loess Plateau. These research results were published inJ. Environ. Manage. 2019, 250(IF 5.874)andLand degradation. Develop(IF 4.275).
In addition, during the study of water quality security and water ecological restoration, the team found that tail water of municipal sewage treatment plant has characteristics of high nitrogen and phosphorus content, high emission load and low carbon-nitrogen ratio. Thus, the receiving water was peculiarly prone to eutrophication. For this case, the team used a sulfur-limestone autotrophic denitrification biofilter (SLADB) and nanocomposite of LaFe (Oxy)hydroxides to treat sewage. The result showed that sulfur-limestone autotrophic denitrification nitrogen removal system was beneficial to nitrogen removal at low temperature condition. Through improvement of complex metal oxides, that is LaFe (Oxy)hydroxides, phosphate in sewage can be adsorbed effectively. These research results were published inBioresour. Technol. 300 (IF 7.763) andEnviron. Sci. Technol. 53, 15 (IF 7.38).
Science,Environmental Science & Technology,Journal of Hazardous Material,Bioresource Technologyare internationally recognised journals in the field of environmental science and engineering. The studies were funded by the National Water Pollution Control and Treatment Science and Technology Major Project, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the High-level Talent Introduction Project of Hebei University.
