School of Chinese Language and Literature of Hebei University was established in December 2008, consisting of the Department of Chinese literature and the Institute of Ancient Books Collation. The Department of Chinese Language and Literature used to be Women's Literature Department of Tianjin College of Industry and Commerce (1933~1948), which was founded in 1943. The director was Liu Bin and Sun Jiayu was the director of the female department. The Women’s College of Liberal Arts was established in April 1945, and its director was Liu Nairen, who was the president of Tianjin College of Industry and Commerce. In August 1946, the Women's College of Liberal Arts admitted both men and women students and was renamed the Department of Chinese Literature. Also, the Department of Western Language was founded.

In October 1948, Tianjin College of Industry and Commerce was renamed Jingu Private University. In 1951, the Ministry of Education of the Central People’s Government approved the request of the board of Jingu Private University (1948-1951) to change the University into a public school and established the Normal College on basis of College of Liberal Arts. In 1952, Tianjin Normal College was founded on the original site of the Normal College of Jingu University. In June 1958, Tianjin Normal College was expanded to Tianjin Normal University. In May 1960, Tianjin Normal University had been changed into a comprehensive university which was named Hebei University by the decision of Hebei Provincial Party Committee. In 1970, Hebei University moved to Baoding (In May 1966, the capital of Hebei Province moved from Tianjin to Baoding; In February 1968, the provincial capital moved from Baoding to Shijiazhuang.) In 1986, the Institute of Ancient Books Collation was established at the rear office of Hebei University, Machang Road, Tianjin. Professor Zhan Ying was the first director of the institute.

In 1980, Journalism was added to the Chinese Language Department. In 1995, Journalism was separated from the Chinese Language Department and formed the Department of Journalism. In the same year, the Department of Chinese Language was approved as the Talent Training and Scientific Research Base of Chinese Language by the government of Hebei Province. In October 2000, the Department of Chinese Language, the Department of History and the Institute of Ancient Books Collation merged to form the School of Humanities. In December 2008, the Department of History was separated from the School of Humanities and formed the College of History with the Center of History of Song Dynasty. The School of Humanities was renamed the School of Chinese Language and Literature.

School of Chinese Language and Literature has formed a healthy atmosphere that all scholars advocate science and attach great importance to teaching practice in the long course of development. Thus many influential experts and scholars (Gu sui, Zhan Ying, Zhang Gong, Pei Xuehai, Huang Qi, Lei Shiyu, Wei Jichang and other famous scholars) in the academic world have emerged and taught here for a long time. Also, the School provides a large number of outstanding talents for the society and makes remarkable achievements.
